Book review - Adolescence (12-18years)

Pfeffer, Susan Beth. (2010). This world we live in. Boston Mass: Harcourt A year ago, Miranda had no idea that she would be regretting not eating food that has now become scarce. Every day has become a struggle to survive. She, along with her mother and 2 brothers are among the few who have survived a world wide tragedy that has decimated the world population and left the remaining striving to survive. Are there others out there? What's become of her father? Her step-mother and her unborn child? This book will make you prioritize some of the more important things in life, family, religion, friends, fresh air, food and water. All these things we take for granted. If they disappeared and you were fighting your neighbors for essentials, could you survive? Miranda faces many challenges that we can only imagine, what would you do in her place? This book is intended for a mature older adolescent audience who will enjoy this book for all the truths it can reveal. You will find yourself cheering, yelling and booing at some of the characters in the book. This is a tale of survival of the fittest. This tale is of humanity at its’ lowest point. What would you do to keep you and your family alive?

Book review - Middle childhood (7-12years)

Seuss, Dr. (2003). Oh, the places you’ll go. London: HarperCollins

This is an absolutely magical, inspirational and fun book. This book is perfect for describing the ups and downs, the joy, the sad, bad, beautiful moments, the trials and tribulations – all these adventures that make and help us during our journey in life. In the beginning of the story, it begins with the highs. This is a natural progression for all people but at this age, they would probably be more in tune with trying to figure out their place in society, in social circles and amongst family and friends. The character shows no fears until the inevitable happens, meaning with the highs come the lows. This is to be expected in our journey. This book will teach your child/ren the magic that is the journey of life. In every aspect of life there are always the great moments that make life amazing but sometimes there are also the sad and bad that will make it hard for them. This book is a great read for middle childhood age group 7-12.

Book review - Babies and Toddlers, early childhood (0-6 years)

Sharratt, Nick. (2005). Muddlewitch Does Magic Tricks. London, Great Britain: Egmont

Muddlewitch is a young witch who uses her magic to do tricks. What does she do? She magicks everything from the chair, to the cat and even the gold fish. Remember that delicious bowl of green apples – well, what colour do you think the apples and bowl will be when Muddlewitch is finished with them?Full of beautiful colours and texture, this pull-the-tab book has been known to entrance many audiences. This is an all time favourite with the preschool groups attending story time at the library. The interaction with the children is absolutely magical. They love to guess what colour the character is going to magick everything. You’ll have them screaming their guesses at you. The pull-the-tab portion of the book also offers delightful contact for the children to reveal what colour she changed the object to. Bright, beautiful, interactive, this book is a must for babies, toddlers and children beginning primary school. You’ll have your audience entranced from when you open the book right through to the end. This book is so popular with parents and teachers, you just might have to go out there and buy your own.

Web 2.0 Round - Here we go again. Week 1 : Box.net - online file storage

Well that was interesting - ummm not. I had a hard time with this, not the task itself but I think my PC not responding to anything I was trying to do. I tried uploading an image which would not work but I did get to see Tosca's creation - I like the socks advert.

Files were taking forever to upload so I decided to cancel - I was getting impatient. We could use this for work but there are so many other easier ways - like google. This would be too hard for our customers so I wouldn't promote what I don't use myself. It would be to complicated for them.

Week 6 - Facebook

This has taken me ages to complete, I just fell off the bandwagon. I was doing the whole web2.0 thing, week by week but then I got distracted. I'm back to finish it off.

OK lets talk about facebook, it's a huge scam (lol). I'm kidding to all those die hard facebook addicts, you know who you are. I've watched a few of you stalking and stalking some more. It's a good place to find your mates, let the whole world know how your feeling. Seriously, why would you want to do that? I do have a few friends, ok a lot of friends who love facebook and practically live in facebook land. It's a good tool for those who like to socialise via the net or when your too busy but I'm a hands on chick and I love the whole interacting with real people. That does not mean I do not have a facebook page, I do. I hardly use it. It's very easy to use.

I have noticed a few of our customers trolling our facebook page, if I remember, I do promote our page to customers.

Lastly, what did I think of the whole experience? De ja vu. I've been here before, haven't I? It's good to have these sessions. It provides new things that we can use for our customers. Looking ahead to the next one. YaY!

Week 5 - Music Files and mp3s

I love music..well not exactly...not the kind of music (if you can call it that) that comes out now. Although in fairness, there are some "newish" artists that are ok. I'm more into the old stuff...I love Metallica, Black Sabbath, Tool, Killing Heidi, Fur Patrol, the nice stuff lol....

I visited a couple of these sites and found them easy to navigate and use. http://itsfreedownloads.com/ and http://www.mp3.com/ were my favourite ones. I'm not really into downloading stuff from the internet anymore.

I think the patrons at this library would find it too complicated to use. We'd have to sit there all day with them and show them where to click, why we're clicking, when we're clicking (lol) but the younger patrons would find it easy. I honestly did not know that there were so many sites we can download music - FOR FREE. You learn something new everyday.

Week 4 - Good Reads

This site is a good readers advisory tool. My favourite is still "LibraryThing" They're basically offer the same thing.

It's a website for book lovers. It's just like Library Thing, you can browse and have a look at what everyone's reading look at their reviews and ratings. You can also post your own reviews and ratings.

This would be a good tool for those indecisive readers - those who don't know what they want to read.
